BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) -- Crown Prince Naruhito is in Brazil to take part in celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Latin America's largest country.
On Wednesday, Crown Prince Naruhito will meet with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, visit the Senate and Congress and visit members of the local Japanese community.
On Thursday, the second day of an 11-day visit, he heads for Sao Paulo, home to Brazil's largest Japanese community.
He also is scheduled to travel to the Port of Santos. It was there that on June 18, 1908, nearly 800 Japanese peasants landed aboard the steamship Kasato Maru.
The arrival spurred a wave of immigration that has grown to 1.5 million people -- the largest Japanese community outside Japan.
